Yes!!! This is exactly right! Thank you so much for sharing your epiphany. It's going to be a VERY hard sell in this food culture, I know, but it doesn't benefit only the food allergy kids, it benefits everyone! Hope you don't mind if I share this widely.

Awww. Thank you, Carla. I love your comment and I'm touched by your faith in me! I'm reminded actually of a piece on your own site -- your article about the decision to homeschool your girls. In that piece you spoke about using your parental gut to guide your decisions, and I couldn't agree more. Parenting both my boys, but particularly L., has really been an exercise in learning to trust my instincts and ignore much of what I'm told by others. So as we move forward into the next chapters, it'll be exciting and nerve-wracking and hopefully enjoyable -- mostly enjoyable -- to see where our instincts lead us!

Love this. Having an only child, I'm especially tempted to see her as a version of me. But the older she gets, she more I realize that while I'm responsible for her being here, and she shares my DNA, she is entirely her own person. It's been such a privilege to watch her develop AWAY from being a mini-me, to being a completely separate mind and soul. It's wonderful you are able to do that with your boy being so young. Good for you.

We are given the children we need and vice versa, right? Like your piece for the show, just a beautiful and precise glimpse into your heart right now. Your son sounds so amazing and that you are his mother, well it makes me teary to know this Gifted little soul is in your care - I know you will knock down doors and move mountains for him, you'll advocate and cheer for him to be nothing less but himself and when what he needs is gentleness, you'll provide him the safe place he needs to retreat, recharge, regroup. We should all be so lucky to have you in our corner.

I'm also left thinking how much, like you point out, the middle is celebrated. And I'm not sure why. To know this early in your sweet boy's life that he is Gifted sets you on a trajectory to do everything you can to save him from a dreadful and stifling existence in the middle where surely he wouldn't flourish. Your family gets to consciously decide and celebrate and nurture the magic in him, consciously standing back giving him room to soar. How many people must endure a lifetime of being made to fit in or being told there's something wrong with what comes naturally to them? You're saving him from all that BS.

And let's be honest, being made to fit in, being pushed towards the middle - it is, unfortunately, second nature for our culture. But having a family that not only supports you but encourages you to be you, well that's the best anecdote for life in the middle.

Excited for what comes next for you and your family. So honored to know you, mama!
ps. Fun house mirror version bit = loves it.
pps. There are two paragraphs I wanted to quote here & draw hearts around. Since I already wrote a novel, I refrained =) Powerful stuff here.

I need to do this, too. Embrace the extreme life. Let's do it together.
And throw a little tap dancing in there, too. Because that's always good.
