headshotThis is me.

I’m Bri. I run this blog. It’s where I chronicle a variety of things related to food and families – recipes, lunchbox ideas, tips, and the occasional rant or passionate ramble about food policy.

I like to think of myself as a young, cool, urban fringe locavore, but the reality is, I’m just a working mom, neither quite as young nor as cool as I used to pretend to be, who’s trying to figure out how to get everybody fed.  And by “fed,” I mean with as much grace, humor, taste, style, and locally/responsibly produced food as I can reasonably achieve.  And maybe it’ll be healthy, too.  And…oh, yeah, not too pricey.

When I’m not blogging here (which, to be honest, is most of the time), I’m a freelance writer and communications consultant. I’ve spent over a decade working in program development and creative initiatives, most of it for non-profits and small businesses. I’m currently a team member for The Family Dinner Project, so if you like what you see here on my blog, you can head over there to find more of my content. I was a featured contributor to the Cooking with Trader Joe’s: Easy Lunchboxes cookbook and was also honored to be mentioned in the Cooking Light Dinnertime Survival Guide. You can also occasionally find me blogging for HandPicked Nation.

This is the family I try so hard to keep fed – no small feat, especially as the boys get bigger! We don’t at all look like this anymore. It’s a really old picture, but again with the honesty: I haven’t had a chance to get another decent family photo since this was taken. So imagine if you will that the kids are about 3 or 4 years older, and you’ll be in the right ballpark. As of this writing (2015), my older son, Liam, is 8 years old. His younger brother, Patrick, is going to be 6 in just a few days. That’s my college sweetheart there on the left. We’ve been married for 10 years. I won’t tell you how old he is.

The title of this blog comes from my best friend from childhood, whose family members represent a mix of eating styles and preferences, from the relatively adventurous to the…well, let’s say “somewhat less adventurous.”  Their family joke has always been that certain members won’t eat anything “red, round, or green.”  My mission, as a home cook, mother, wife, and conscious eater, is to make all that red, round, and green stuff — plus lots of other ingredients — as tasty and non-threatening as possible.   So I hang out at farmers’ markets, talk to growers, read read read about food and agriculture and feeding kids and eating well, and turn my family into guinea pigs whenever I get a chance.  So far, the goal has been accomplished: one way or another, we’re all getting fed.
