Mom’s Meat Sauce
1 medium onion, diced
4-6 cloves garlic (depending on your tastes), minced
1 pound lean ground beef (we use grass-fed), or beef, pork, and veal mixture
2 28-oz cans crushed tomatoes
1 cup water
2 tsp. dried basil
2 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
pinch red pepper flakes (optional)
Combine the onions, garlic, and meat in the bottom of the slow cooker. Mix together all the remaining ingredients, pour over the meat, and stir to combine, breaking up the meat with a spoon. Cover and cook on LOW for 8-10 hours. Stir well before serving. This recipe will make enough sauce for 2 pounds of pasta.

Excuse my ignorance…but would you brown the ground beef before you put it in the crock? I would assume yes, but wanted to check before I tried the recipe. Looks easy and yummy – thanks for a great site!
Hi Bethanne! Thank YOU, and welcome! The answer is that truthfully, you can do it either way. The meat sauce works out fine if you don’t have time to brown the beef first, but I know that there are a lot of people who prefer to brown first and that is a SLIGHTLY better version.
Thanks so much- can’t wait to try!
